The global denim market was around 4.1 billion Euro levels in 2016, denim pants exports was around 42.5 billion euros level. Turkey is one of the top 5 most important countries of the denim segment.

One of the most interesting materials of fashion; denim fabrics and the final denim products never lose the demand boom. Denim products, which can be used with appropriate designs for all seasons and many different purposes, are a prominent feature of textile.

The denim fabric report prepared by İTHİB in relation to this growing industry sheds light on developments in global markets and Turkey. World denim fabric exports saw a peak in 2015 with a value of 4.2 billion Euros. In 2016, it was worth 4.1 billion Euros, the second highest level of all times, with a decrease of 1.4%. China has the largest share of world denim fabric exports, as in almost all areas. China dominates the market with 38.3%, followed by Pakistan with 10.7%, Hong Kong with 9.8% and Turkey with 8.6%.

Denim fabric imports have declined both in value and quantity over the past years in the EU market, where consumption of denim garment products is intense. Imports of denim fabrics, which amounted to 290 million Euros in 2015, declined steadily and decrease to 234 million Euros in 2017. Between 2008 and 2016, the amount of imports of the EU region in this product decreased by 27.5%. Turkey is the largest denim fabric supplier for the European market. Providing 30.4% of EU’s denim fabric imports in 2017, Turkey has achieved revenues of 70 million Euros. Turkey is the most important supplier with 26.7% on the basis of the amount as well.

USA imports of denim fabrics have also been around the same levels for a long period; between 85 and 92 million Euros. In 2015, 91 million Euros denim fabric has been imported by USA, this import dropped down to 82 million Euros in 2016. The largest denim fabric supplier for USA is Japan with 20 million Euros. Mexico follows his with 16 million Euros, China with 14 million Euros and Turkey with 14 million Euros as well. 16.4% of USA denim imports is met by Turkey.

Turkey’s exports increased more than imports

Turkey’s denim fabric trade has a very light development in exports, whilst having a largest rate of increase in imports in the recent years. On closer inspection, Turkey’s exports of denim fabrics in recent years seems to be fixed at the level of 300 million Euros; 320 million Euros in 2014, 341 million Euros in 2015, 355 million Euros in 2016 and 327 million Euros in 2017. In 2017, the largest exports was to Tunisia with 46 million Euros. 14.1% of the total denim fabric exports were made to this country. Tunisia was followed by Egypt (42 million Euros), Italy (36 million Euros) and Morocco (33 million Euros) respectively.

Turkish textile industry’s imports of denim fabric shows a steady increase. The imports were around 241 million Euros in 2015, and reached 254 million Euros in 2016 and 311 million Euros in 2017. Turkey’s largest supplier of denim fabrics was Egypt with a 27.4% share. Egypt, which we have imported 85 million Euros of denim fabric was followed by Pakistan (83 million Euros), Italy (21 million Euros) and Turkmenistan (21 million Euros).

Denim market pants exports were 2 billion Euros

Trousers are the most important item in the final denim products. In 2017 the total value of the global market denim pants export was 42 billion 449 million Euros. China ranked first with 28.4% share and a value of 12 billion Euros in this exports. Followed by Bangladesh with a share of 17.6% and a value of 7.4 billion euros. 3rd largest global market exporter; Turkey’s share in global exports was 5% with a value of 2.1 billion Euros.

Exporting 2.1 billion Euros worth of denim pants in 2016, Turkey’s exports has decreased by 2.6% to a value of 2.0 billion Euros in 2017. In 2017, Turkey’s largest denim market for denim pants was Spain with a 20.5% share. 425 million Euros worth of products was sold to this country. Spain was followed by Germany with 358 million Euros, the UK with 264 million euros; and the Netherlands with 168 million Euros.

In 2017 Turkey has realized 270 million Euros imports of denim trousers. Largest purchase countries for Turkey were as follows; Egypt (90 million), Bangladesh (64 million), Italy (15 million) and Spain (15 million).
