Prof. Dr. Cem Güneşoğlu, who carries out studies at Gaziantep University Faculty of Engineering, Department of Textile Engineering, produced mattress fabric with antibacterial and antiviral properties by using borophene material obtained from boron. Prof. Dr. Güneşoğlu decided to use borophene material on the mattress during the studies in the faculty laboratory. The borophene material synthesised during the studies was turned into liquid and applied to the fabric used in the mattress. The borophene fabric was then dried in the oven and made usable. In the tests on the fabric obtained, it was concluded that the product prevents the growth of bacteria and microorganisms thanks to its antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Borophene fabric, the rising star in the mattress industry, is going into mass production

Prof. Dr. Güneşoğlu said they believe that the share of borophene in textiles will increase in a short time and stated that they are negotiating with a mattress company for the mass production of borophene mattresses. In his statement on his social media account, Güneşoğlu informed that the borophene-added mattress fabric will be offered to the market by Comfytex for the first time in the world and that the launch will be realised very soon. In the statement made by Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Applications Center (SUNUM), it was announced that a contract was signed with Comfytex for the transfer of know-how for the use of borophene produced in SUNUM laboratories in mattress fabrics.

In his statement to the AA correspondent, Güneşoğlu explained that they have determined that the borophene fabric makes positive contributions to the person sleeping on it; ‘We have findings that the use of borophene in mattress textiles increases the amount of heat lost by the user during sleep and therefore falls asleep in a shorter time. In this study, we developed an application bath to transfer the borophene dispersion to the fabric. After the application, we measured and reported the effect of this on the sleep quality of the user numerically. This product also had a commercial equivalent. The first example of mattress fabric containing borophene in the world was completed with this study ‘he said. Prof. Dr. Güneşoğlu added that they are also working in different fields related to borophene.

‘Borophene is a very new material in the mattress industry’

Prof. Dr. Güneşoğlu expressed that the mattress fabric he developed not only provides comfort but also protects the person against bacteria and viruses during sleep. Stating that borophene has positive effects on sleep quality, Güneşoğlu continued as follows: ‘We know the use of other alternative products and chemicals containing boron in the mattress industry, but borophene is a very new material. There is currently no other example that uses the high electrical and thermal conductivity of borophene. Borofen, with its high energy storage and thermal management capability, is a material that has a positive effect on the health and comfort of the user, provided that it is used on surfaces in contact with the skin.’

With this fabric, users’ time to fall asleep is shorter and the duration of sleep is longer

Prof. Dr. Güneşoğlu stated that he started his studies based on the effects of borophene on health; ‘We are mammals and mammals can fall asleep if the body core temperature decreases, and they wake up when this temperature rises again. Fluctuations in body temperature also negatively affect sleep quality. The starting point of sleep quality means shortening the duration of this temperature drop and increasing the duration of sleep. We fall asleep if we raise the body’s skin temperature and lower the core temperature that raises the skin temperature. Borofen makes this falling asleep time very fast compared to alternative materials. In other words, in the borophene mattress fabric, the users’ time to fall asleep is shorter, while the duration of sleep is longer.’
